Sri RUDRAM CHANTING

Śrī Rudram is the most sacred prayer-chant to worship Lord Shiva. It is a Vedic chant taken from the Krishna Yajurveda’s Taittiriya Samhita. It comprises two parts, the Namakam and Chamakam.

Namakam: The Namakam, named due to the repetition of the word “namo” invokes the various names of Rudra. It recognises the violent aspects of Rudra and requests him to be benevolent and peaceful, rather than violent and destructive.

Chamakam: The Chamakam, named so due to the repetition of the word “chame” lists a series of benedictions sought from the divine Rudra. It acknowledges both material and spiritual desires and requests the deity for both.

It is believed that wherever the Rudram is chanted, that place becomes free from disease, drought, thefts and other ills. The Shiva Purāṇa explains that by chanting Rudram, one gains both worldly pleasures and liberation.
