Why is this course unique?
Himalayan School of Traditional Dance founded by Brahmarishi Mohanji, aims at developing full fledged artistes in Bharatanatyam and/or Kathak. It takes one on a journey to experience awareness, alignment and devotion through the traditional dance forms of Bharat. The Himalayan School method focuses on cultivating individual creative abilities to become a full fledged dancer.
Offered primarily online the students can structure the self-practise at their own flexible time during the week after the weekend sessions.
Course information:
The course includes live online sessions and relevant practice videos that every student has to go through before the next session. Both courses will be primarily taught and led by Artistic Directors Radha Subramanian and Arti Parnajpe.
- Foundation course in Bharatanatyam/Kathak – Tailored for beginners, this is focused on early stage development to learn Bharatanatyam/ Kathak and strengthen the basics through foot work, hand movements and navarasas. This will lay the foundations for pursuit of advanced courses in the future.
- Advance training in Bharatanatyam/Kathak – For those early years practitioners that have had some formal training in dance and would like to delve into deeper learning of the different aspects of Bharatnatyam/Kathak to emerge as a full fledged artiste capable of giving stage performances.
Teaching Methodology used:
- Practical movement training
- Theory sessions focusing on different aspects of traditional dance
- Watching videos/ performances [Nath Hare]
- Discussions on awareness and devotion through dance
- Videos for offline practice
- Introspective and creative thinking followed by practical application
Course Outcomes:
The course is focussed on making the students understand practically and theoretically the traditional concepts of Bharatanatyam and Kathak, while focussing on Awareness, Alignment and Devotion through dance. The course will enable students to,
- Learn and understand the history, roots and origins of traditional dance forms of Bharat from different aspects
- Understand many theoretical concepts of the artform and being able to practically correlate it
- Grow creatively by learning the nuances of Bharatanatyam or Kathak through Hastas, Bhedas, Rasas, Mandalas
- Develop an understanding of practical applications or the Viniyogas.
- Go deeper within oneself by learning to actually perform Shlokas from Natyashastra
- Assimilate the nuances of rhythm, according to the traditional music.
- Understand how different warm ups from yoga/ kalaripayattu can help towards flexibility in dance
- Focus on rhythmic precision through Nritta and being able to tune the mind and body towards alignment
- Imbibe the knowledge of direction, postures and gestures through dance
- Feel how dancing can make a positive difference by connecting to oneself
Course completion certificates will be provided to the students based on the credits under each section of theory and practicals after the completion of the course.
Prerequisite:
- Commitment and respect towards the artform
- Minimum 85% Attendance
- Punctuality in logging in for the sessions
- Students must take up both theory and practicals in order to receive the Certificate of completion at the end of the course
